What is CMYK?
CMYK is a colour setting on a normal printer it stands for C- Cyan, M-Magenta, Y- Yellow and K- Black. These colours are used when printing to make you finished product often leading to many colour mixes. When creating my bookmark I could only see the colours on the screen this is a different setting as it is colour through light and is normally set on RGB this means red, green blue these are primary colours that appear much brighter then those generated by ink. To make sure that both colours settings match to make the final bookmark on the screen like the bookmark that you will print you have to change the settings in the programs you have used this is easily done. I was using Photoshop and decided to change my setting when creating the black and white imagery this not only allowed me to see as it would be when printed but also helped balance the many shades within the compiled images.
Why Should your Photoshop file be 300dlp when sending to the printer ?
All photoshop documents should be sent as a higher resolution image. Dlp means dots per image when printing this is mean that the clarity is higher when working on a professional printed art peice you want the resloution to be the best possible. For online artwork this does not have to be as high as many screen work have lower dlps this does mean you have to change the dip yourself in the program otherwise it is set automatically.
Why send a PDF to the printer via email?
PDF files are Portable files that can be sent to any computer. They are small and are easy to email as they can be sent quickly and effectively because most files are sent with extra information that normally affects the file size this does not happen with PDF files. You may also send a PDF over email as they can be opened on any device this helps when people have an computer that has not been updated. Most computers open PDF automatically not needing to check the computer for extra information or programs.

My finished bookmark :
My assigned book was Catch 22 by Joseph Heller this is an anti-war novel that was based around bomberdiers in the second world war. From the book I gathered knowledge that there were many locations I wanted to show this travelling on my bookmark to create the feeling of an adventure. I first did this by gathering image of the many locations. Firstly the sky with the planes that they fly within it i found this easily as the war was well documented this also helped when finding the other images to compile the bookmark. The next location I have chosen on the bookmark is the mountains this is to represent the area where many characters died or faked their deaths. this is followed by the forest and sea that they talk about throughout the novel. This is then followed by the camp and medical ward here is where Captain Yossarian ( the main character) mostly stays in the novel. To add to the connection from the real world war I have used an american identification logo that was found on many of the planes to identify there own team these were found on the planes wings. I have kept this using the star within the circle I have also kept the blue and white colours they have used on the front. The only detail I changed was the number 22 which identitfys the book.
Bold or subtle colours?
I have used a mixture of dark navy colours with the centre being around the red, white and blue thats featured on the american planes and flags. These colours were promoted around at the time in the second war to keep up spirits and show cadets what they were fighting for. They also used these colours to identitfy there own team. For the overlaid colours on the images i kept to the dark series colours but have kept them less bold instead using the colours as filters to tear the locations apart. each colour linking to the location the dark brown for the boring camp to the yellow for the medical ward where Yossarian felt safe and happy. I used the connatations of the colour to link them to the many angles of the book.
Was there a limited colour palette or many colours?
I think there was a limited colour palette for my book as the colours had to represent the sriousness of the war but also the comedic atmosphere of the book. I have stuck to using the dark natural military colours to represent the seriesness of the narrater even in the most comedic situations.
Do you think the use of colour colour is successful (explain why) ?
I think the colours I have used are successful in creating the bold military appeal. They represent the many confusing sides of the book. The only changes that I would make would be changing the filtered colours over the locations as I did think some through more then others. This did not affect the overall look but could be changed. Overall I think the bold military blue, white and red are very representative of the novel and the second world war. They represent the colours that we think of when we think of the armed services and I think this was fitting for the novel that does back the army in some respects although it does not approve of war.
Use of text
What was your choice of typeface, scale and colour?
On my book mark I have stuck to two typefaces. The first one being PortagoITC TT(shown as the 22) this is a military font that can be seen in many military runned camps sometimes on the planes and tents. I have chosen this as this is the main location in the book they have also used a similair font on the Book cover. The military fonts are continued to the blurb where I have used Prestige Elite Std Bold this is still milatry and is mostly used on the planes for the codes and number that is easily seen under neath the planes wing. I found these fonts while doing research and decided that I wanted to keep the military font on the bookmark just to keep to the books man theme of war. The scale of the titles 22 is large to fit the star logo but with the blurb font i have kept to 12pts this is the smallest readable size for a regular reader. As this book is for adults i have kept this small font if it was for a younger audience I would of kept the font at 14pts or above. Most of the font on by bookmark i white this has been used to make it seem like it has been punched into the paper this is also the same for the title 22 as the background colour contrast the text making it easy to read.
Does this reflect you theme well (explain why) ?
I think overall my text choice fit will the the theme of war and miltary look of the book by using the same font as featured on the book cover I made a direct connection to the book not only through text and the punched out colour effect also features on various covers for the book. If I was to do this differently I would not change any font decissions. I think that most of my text choices reflect the war theme welll which is the main location and topic of the book.
Use of Imagery
Does your choice of images reflect the theme well ?
I have chosen to see images of the changing locations within the book these all play a key role to make the books plot flow. I have chosen to do this as I think the fact that war can be like a journey as the places change with each chapter I have edited the photos together showing the first location of the hospital war first going all the war back to the plane in the sky this is the main plot point for the book. These photos edited together create an adventure and a journey just like the book giving you a taster of how the book goes and what you will experience.
Is the imagery abstract or realistic?
All of the imagery i have used is realistic photos taken at the same time the book was set this gives a realistic dimension to the book as it could of happened at the time as it was possible. This war time photography displays the more serious side of the book although it has some comedy in it there still is thee serious theme that my bookmark displays. I think using realistic photography builds an alternative reality which helps peoples imagination allowing them to submerge into the book.
Is it hand drawn, computer drawn or photography ?
I have used photography like stated above I think that building the alternative dimension in peoples heads allows them to see the real side to the novel. All the photos i have used come from real sources that would of been like the charcters seen in the book and this really makes you think about what Hellers saying. This all attracts you to read the book.
Hierarchy of information
What do you read first and why is your eye drawn to this ?
The first thing that catches your attention is the large catch 22 logo seen at the top of the bookmark. I created this logo from the identification mark on most planes in the work war. I have created this round symbol so that it pops out above the book. Its the largest detail of the book and says the basic details like the book title in a way as most can identitfy the book by the number 22. It also tells you a small glimpse of the plot is you look further as you can see that it is the symbol on most old military airplanes and this is the main basis of he book.I have made this be the first thing you see as it is the main identification of the book.
In your opinion is the hierarchy in the correct order ?
In my opinion I think that the hierarchy is the correct order as the first thing you notice is the identfication symbol that works like a logo for the book. The hierarchy for the text on the bookmark starts with the title and author which is the basic information that is needed . This is then followed with less important information such as the blurb although this gives context and information it is not needed as the bookmark will still be a book mark without it. This the same with the images featured on the bookmark as the main symbol stands high so it is easily read and understood then they can look further down the context is displayed this is the plot points in the book in my case the settings of the book. I think overall the hierarchy starts with the basic then flows through to the plot and further information. This is similair to the book itself which starts with an introduction or authors notes and works itself up to further action.
Tools and techniques
What tools/ techniques did you use?
At first to create my bookmark i used basic skills in photoshop. I took the images that I compiled and saw where the desired edges would fit together I used the lasso tool to gather the segments that I need placing them layer upon layer to form the overall main body of the book mark. I also put filters of colours over each layer so that you can see each individual location and layer. For each colour i used the hue and colour tint in photoshop to edit each photo this also allowed me to change the levels of each photo so that not only did the resolution match but so that they were the same levels of exposure. Once I had created this main body I took the bookmark in to Adobe Illistrater her is where i formed the head and back of the bookmark. I firstly created the top symbol using the simple shape tools toping this off with the text. For the back I again used the shape tool but also measured it to the bookmark that I already had formed. To finish my bookmark I added cutout lines these were easy to add and were needed because of the shape of my bookmark.
Conclusion
What is most successful about you design?
I think overall my finished design fits the brief and potraits my given book accurately. Its basic structure shows that the book is about the military and this is carried right through to the text. I think the design is basic and fits the serious but joyful fit of the book. The bookmark is the correct size and shows that serious but funny themes of the book.
What might you alter to make it more successful, explain you reason why?
If I was to alter my finished design I would of made it more lively although it has a serious theme I think it could of been better if it also portryed the humour of the book and had a stronger connection to the book. My design had a typical shape this made it basic and to serious. I think I could of improved this by reading further into my book looking into the key ideas and what other people thought the key ideas were.
