Arms around the child- Evaluation

My final outcome has been strongly influenced by the artist James Victore. In my GIF I have used a very similar idea of using fitted text within a powerful shape in my case a gun. I have also used limited colour within my design I have changed the hierarchy of imformation as the bright colours on the black and white background star the main information for example the red is representative of death and the orange is of saviour that is seen the charity itself. These are the key ideas that are going to be the main theme for my animation. Overall, I have chose to style my animation similar to James Victore because of the impact that you receive from his work this is why he has been my main inspiration.

I think my final banner has completed the given brief in the respect that it displays the animation in a powerful and creative way. The banner can also help the charity as it features the text donate line, this is what matters in the end as it is completing it job as neccisary. If I was to improve anything about my final outcome I would change the length of my animation by making it longer I could add further statistics making the animation detailed. I would also have changed the size of certain feature such as the gun just to take the impact further. My final income has been completed to what I believe is my best standard.

I think that my animation carries the ethical theme of the brief by making a loud statement about a series ethical situation, By adding the powerful words of ‘save this innocent blood’ I also pull in the shock methods that other ethical artists use. Other artists also use the realistic element such as the blood spatter featured in my GIF this has been added just further the points that I have made. This allows the reality of the situation to dawn on people hopefully provoking an emotional response. I think that my animation does create this response hopefully filling the need for it to be ethically connected. The work follows many of the same themes as other ethical pieces such a bold statements in text and the bold image. This I think will provoke an emotional response.

Overall, I think that my animation fits its brief and carries a emotional and powerful messages about gun crime whilst informing you of the charities work. If I was to approach this brief and task differently I would consider carrying out in depth primary and secondary research about the charity so that I understand the ethical theme fully. I would also change the route that I took to create my final outcome instead I would have completed research elements before completing my animation and poster so that I would have fully understood the theme. The design itself could be improved so it details further facts and carries on for a longer time span. Overall I think my animation was fitting for the job that it was created for and fits the given brief whilst maintain the same features as other ethical artists and posters.

Creating the animation: Arms around a child

I am planning to create a final animation to help portrait my fact in the most intresting mannner. To do this I have taken my initial poster :
I have developed this image futher into a short storyline with a large impact. Here is the storyline I have created :

As you can see in this sketch my main idea is to create a spinning bullet out of the gun to hit the wall and splatter with blood finishing with bold writting over the text stateing save this innocent blood. To do this I created a basic sketch of what I want the end slide to look like here is what I created :

All I need to create the few screens that will come together to form my animation. Firstly I need to create a image with the bullet included to create the motion of the movement between the bullet coming out of the gun and hitting the wall.

The main step after this is to create the needed blood spatter for the text to sit atop I may have to do this in creative way to create the look that I want.  To complete this I used a the school yard technique of paint and a straw allowing me to create a realistic blood spatter here are a few that I created :

From here I placed the image into photoshop to not only define the lines but also to create the perfect red colour  that is blood and add this to my final poster along with fitted text stating " save this innocent blood " hopefully referring back to the topic and making a large impact :

To go from here and create my animation I needed to import my layers for example the text and then the gun, on to single layers that can be moved easily. Here is an example of my sections:

These need to be created into motion through the process of completing a timeline on this timeline each object will be slowly placed into the screen at a time to help create the first and last images.

From here we can create the tweens this will not only create the movement that forms the animation but also bring the speed. I have selected to add ten tweens in-between each action except from the firing of the gun which I wanted to be a swift action just like it would be in real life. After This I have my final animation the last step that I needed to take was to turn it into a GIF that could be saved for the internet to do this i selected save for the web and then a box will appear from here you can save the animation correctly . My animation did need changing at this time to be a saveable size to do this I not only adjusted the caves size but also the pixelation and quality of the image.

From here is my final animation :

Creating the poster : Arms around the child

Now I have done research not only into the charity but also into other ethically motivated artist such as James Vinctore I have now started to create my own poster. This poster will hopefully convey hard hitting facts in an artistic and emotion way. I first started by research four particular facts that I thought would make interesting images. These are the four facts I have chosen :

  • 1.2 million children are trafficked every year.
  • 151 million children are living homeless on the streets.
  • £20 a month can supply a child with all there needed school equipment.
  • 10,000 children are injured or die each year from guns.
From these fact I created four quick sketches to see how I would visually represent them, here are the designs I created  :

From these sketches I decides that the gun had a clear hard hitting message that could be done simply. now I had decided I enlarged this image to make it look like finished picture here it is :

Looking at this finished drawn image I thought that this would be displayed clearer in a digital format  I found a clear silhouette of a hand gun. such as this one :

Now I had my base I had to add and edit my fitted text I chose to do this one adobe illustrator this was a simple step that only meant I needed to find the correct font.

Here is what I ended up with to make this look more professional I need to add the extra touches such as a logo and possibly even an easy way to text in to donate. And here is the completed product :

Research : ethically motivated artists

Firstly I have carried out research into 6 ethically motivated artists :

  • Herb Luballin
  • Sister Corita Kent
  • Katherine Hemnett
  • Barbara Kruger
  • Jonathan Barnbrook
  • James Victore
From these artist I have chosen to do further research into :

James Victore

Background Information :

James Victore is not only an art director but also dables in other creative lines of work such as designing and writing as he is also an author.  He is american and learnt his craft  at The school of Visual Arts, New York. He has won many awards for his work including an Emmy for his work in Television animation. James Victore also runs a training scheme in which he tries to help other designers improve their work. He also has reaches a hundreds with a youtube channel where he answers the many questions in life. Victores work has been displayed at the Museum of modern art, New York and takes permanent residence at many other museums across the globe. He has list of many famous clients such as Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Moet and Chandon and even The city of New York. He now teaches at the school of visual arts , NYC the same school he attended years before.

Gallery of his work :

In depth appreciation of one example of work :

The piece of work I have chosen is :

This piece of work was created during the summer of 1993 after racial riots upended the streets of New York the very town Victore is from. This poster uses the typical black typography  with a white background which is Common with his work but in this poster he has use the bold red to create a mouth and alert you as red often has the connotations of hate and danger these at the time were both linked with the theme of racism. This limited colour palet helps to create the more dramatic effect which over all alert you to the problem and how cruel it is so over all I think the use of colour was successful. The text and typography is what creates this poster Victore has chosen to create his own typeface with a smudged handwriting and also by creating the mouth with the c this ties the poster together. It seems rough and I think this makes the piece seem childish maybe this is saying that the situation of racism as childish. This font is large and black I think this is mostly done for the effect because the font is the main image on the poster is need to make maximum impact this gives you the loud approach to campaigning as it screams ints message at you. This is whats needed in a campaign poster as you need to know what its about almost instantly to get your message across and I think that this font and image does this perfectly.

There is very little imagery in this protest poster the only image that makes up part of the typography is the large c that has been made into a very crazed looking mouth and teeth. This image is harsh on the eyes and is the largest thing on the page It represents the people that are after dark skinned people and how they are destroying those around that are also part of them this explains why the mouth has been pushed into the text. This image is handrawn just like the text this is limited in the amount of imagery but I think it needs to be as the bold writing and typeface helps the supports the statement that is trying to be made. The most important consideration when creating a poster is the hierarchy of information this is what we see first on the page with this piece it is the very bold pop of colour on the red mouth we are drawn to this not only because it is the largest thing on the page but it is also the only source of colour. I think that the artist has done this to create a rough and harsh hitting appeal it make you want to see why the artist has created it and whats its message which you go on to see when you fully evaluate the poster. The hierarchy if information in this poster goes from the c mouth to the full word of racism then onto the full picture I think this is the correct order as the mouth is the most important thing as its showing how evil racism is . Then when this becomes to form the full word you understand why the evil is being represented and then the overall image allows you to reflect on its whole purpose. I think to create this piece of work he handmade this image then later scanned  it into the computer this might have had to be done to create the final image that he wanted. Overall I think that this image is successful for the campaign that it is supporting it is clear and straight to the point and has an artistic appeal to it. If I was to change this poster I think the only thing that i would do is to re enforce the idea with further imagery I think this would have given the poster a larger to connection to the issue it is supporting.

For further research I have looked up quotes and any further resources that show the artist and his development as a member of the creative industry.

I found this interview as part of a series that looks into artists and their work. In this situation he is being interviewed by Hillman Curtis.

I have also found an exclusive interview he did with an organisation called Speak Up.

Understanding the client : Arms around the child

Arms around the child is a very important charity that helps to provide care for mistreated or ill children. They offer them loving homes, medical care, protection, respect ad education. They offer children who have faced a wide variety of event such as family members being diagnosed HIV or Aids and also neglect, abuse or exploitation they often live in Africa or India.

There introduction to the organisation :

Arms Around The Child seeks to provide a loving home, protection and respect for their spirit and soul. Education for children who are vulnerable, often infected with HIV and orphaned having lost one parent or both. We also intend to provide a sense of community and safety.

We will advocate for the needs of these children so that they may grow up with love and care and can look to the future with happiness.

Arms Around The Child will help to educate the general public concerning the causes and effects of distress, hardship and life as an orphan through our direct engagement with the public through events and major campaigns.

We believe in a future for these kids and intend to do everything we can to make it a bright one. They deserve happiness.

NOW.

They have helped many children including Dheeraj( shown above)  an 8 year old  child from India who after being diagnosed with HIV was forced to wonder the streets alone after being thrown out by his Aunt. Arms around the child now provide a safe home so that he can slowly get better. They raise the fund purely through campaign events such as The other ball this is a large event that happens every year gathering big names in the music industry such as Lily Allen and Florence Welsh. It helps to raise awareness for the charity and honours the many that have helped make the world that little bit better. On the lead up to The other ball they often auction many experience like at the moment there is a site that allows you to bid/donate so that you will receive a private session with Florence Welsh herself and all the proceeds will go to help this wonderful organisation.

They also often help provide awareness for other events such as the mini festival being held in memory of Sam Harper Brighouse by Pixelated people. This is being held to commemorate the love for music that Sam had there will also be a marathon that is raising fund for AATC overall helping to raise funds while supporting something brilliant.

They have a number of new campaign posters that were recently created earlier this year when the website we newly finished these posters show you the people they have helped and the hard issues they are combating.

These posters show the harsh statistics that are reality as one of the poster states 30 million children are sexual abused in conflicted areas if this charity is able to help it will lower this number placing these innocent out of the way helping them grow in life. This can all be changed if there are more and more charities like arms around the charity willing to help.

This just goes to prove how important charities such as Arm around the child are as everyday they are potentially saving peoples lives. They have rescued hundreds of children and are still going today giving them lives that the kids properly never thought possible. They have assisted important campaigns and have brought attention to the many problems a young child can face in a world full of poverty. They strive to help as many children as possible although they can't help them all they can try there upmost to help the ones that they can assist. They help with a diverse amount of problems from education to health issues. By helping all of these issues they are helping people grow in the lives that they were supposed to have.

Factoids animation

Now I have developed basic animation skills we have been given the task to create a small GIF animation of fact which displays the statistic in a fun and creative way. To start this task I researched some interesting facts they may have a feature that can be animated here are the 10 i have chosen :

  1. Only 30% of people can flare there nostrils, can you ? ( http://www.chucklebuzz.com/amazing-funny-facts-statistics/2243/)
  2. banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour ( http://www.dumbfacts.com/facts/directory-of-facts/statistics/random/)
  3. Over 2500 left hand people a year are killed by products made for right handed people ( http://www.strangefacts.com/facts1.html)
  4. The average person has over 1,460 dreams a year. ( http://www.strangefacts.com/facts1.html)
  5. A jellyfish is 95% water ( http://www.strangefacts.com/facts2.html)
  6. americans on adverse eats 18 acres of pizza every day. ( http://wtffunfact.com/page/6)
  7. vending machines kill four times more people a year then sharks ( http://favstar.fm/users/bigshowfactoids)
  8. 10 books on a shelf can be arranged in 3,628,800 different ways ( http://favstar.fm/users/bigshowfactoids)
  9. Camel’s have three eyelids.  (http://uselessfacts.net/page/6/)
  10. Hair is made from the same substance as fingernails. (http://uselessfacts.net/page/8/)
The fact I have chosen to animate is " The advarage person has over 1,460 dreams a year. To start the process of animation I needed to start with draft a storyboard of my chosen fact.

From here I created the 4 main scenes by inserting photos and the wanted text. The next step was clear and simple to add tweens to create movement and here is my final animation :

GIF Animation

We have recently been developing skills in GIF Animation using photoshop. This is completed using individual frames to create animated movement here is a small test sample that I have created:
To further my animation skills I have tried to fade out and in my name I have done this by creating 3 frames in which the opacity is at different levels of appearance from here i added tweens animation frames which allow you to slow the changes.

For the last test of my animation skills I have created an animation of my name that meets at the centre and then separates. I created this by spliting my name into two individual frames that can be altered to move apart this way within the animation frames i can change there position and then add the tween frames her is the example i have created :

Killer Coke

For this Killer coke campaign we have been asked to create an A4 poster using our notes from the document by the  Channels 4 show Despatches. We investigated the many had hitting issues about coke. Here are the notes I have created :
Other ideas I have include : An old cola bottle filled with the red substance that can be taken as blood running within that coke as it pours out of the can. This takes in there  signature colour and even the basis a lot there campaigns.

After taking these notes into consideration I started brainstorm basic ideas I will extend these ideas to bigger sketches.

From these initial sketches I choose my favourite idea which is the last poster shown this features they Boycot of coca cola metion by none other then Martin Luther King JR who called the boycot  sue to racism happeing within the coca cola company. This poster will feature Luther King JR at a speck with bold colours to show the importance of his words.

To start this poster I created the postersize canvas on Photo shop and coloured this the statement red colour that represents the coca cola brand. From here I also added the black and white photo of Martin Luther King JR.

Next I placed this basic poster into Ilistrater firstly to form the speech bubble which can be easily done with the Pen tool. I have also drawn guidlines within this bubble to show where the text needs to sit within.
After the specch bubble was ready I needed to develop the speech I did this agin using the pen tool to draw each individual letter so it fitted the correct amount of space.
After I  slowly built up  the letter I had the basic picture for my poster from here there last touches needed to be applied.

These finishing touches include a coca cola logo to make the picture overall look like a professional coca cola poster .

After making this chang I wanted to add more of an impact with a larger saying e.g say hello to coca cola. This implies that you have not said hello to the real coca cola.

Here is my final product :

For my finished product I have used the background colour Red this is a signature of the coca cola brand . It has been used i all of there past advertising and is part of there identity. The text used was from various places for example the writing in black reminds me of protest boards and posters and has this bold statement appeal. The text for hello slogan was from a poster made by the brand itself in 2012 and of course the coca cola logo is in there instantly recognisable font. I gained all the information needed for this poster through the documentary by the channel 4 programmes Despatches  about killer coke. To create the poster I used both Illistrator and photoshop. Firstly I used photoshop to composite the different element together . The main purpose of using Illistartor was to create this big bold speech bubble that could be easily read. I thick the most successful element of this poster is the bold speech bubble and writing as its the first thing you see and it leaves you thinking.

Guess who project

The guess who projects brief is to create are own  guess who character to develop and remember out illustrator skills. Firstly we had to find a photo displaying face in portrait her is the photo I have chosen :
Although this photo is black and white because I am using as a template to draw the character over it does not matter as I can use other references. Once I had selected this photo I needed to open it within Illistrater to get started. Once I have done this I need to start tracing the main features of the face starting with the eyes.
To create the pupils of my eyes I have used the ellipse tool creating the pupil and the light spot of the pupils of my eyes. To create the whites and eyelid as you can see above I have used the pen tool drawing the curved lines in and filling them with the correct colours to my skin tone. Next I will  focus on further details such as eyelashes and eyeliner.

From this I needed to add other basic features to the face using higlighted lines such as the lips and face shape and even a large section of the fridge which makes up the face. This will also now stand alone without the photo :

Once I had all the features i created my face and hair and included the correct colouration here is what i finally created :

To make this more advanced I will add the shading of my hair giving the impression of the texture of the hair.  This involved me using the pen toll procisely to define the curls.

To add the final touches i added the background, colour and name this is my finished card :
To improve this even further I added the correct font of guess who ( copper black ) and changed the box so it fitted a little bit better.
